The results included a sample size of 36 respondents with very interesting comments on the impact and effectiveness of diversity and inclusion (D&I) today. Some answers were understandable. Others were surprising. And still other responses indicate the work that is still needed in to make a significant difference in our world. How we move D&I from an afterthought to significance is strategically tied to the consistency and commitment organizations throughout our society devote to making D&I a permanent multi-year priority. That indeed remains a tall order to fulfill! Joining us today is Bill Wells, a member of our Kitchen Cabinet Leadership Team and former Chair of the National Black MBA Association. We’ll discuss the findings and highlight the salient survey points aimed at keeping us on our toes. ========================

We close schools, government offices, stores, and the US Stock Exchange shuts down in memory of his crucifixion. With more than 2.18 billion followers worldwide, there has to be a powerful message in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As I Christian, I am one of those followers and will pay tribute to that Holy Man from tonight through Sunday...the time we commemorate Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday Morning. Let the church bells ring and let your Christianity proclaim the inclusive generosity of a living and soul saving God. This is the highest time period in the Christian calendar and beyond the Easter Egg hunts, fancy new clothes and new Easter hats the essence of Christianity is symbolized in the death AND resurrection of Jesus Christ. Listen, reflect and pause....as we enter the high holy Easter Weekend. ====== Facts: There are 2.18 billion Christians around the world, up from about 600 million in 1910, according to a 2011 study by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life. But the world’s overall population also has risen rapidly, from an estimated 1.8 billion in 1910 to 6.9 billion in 2010. As a result, Christians make up about the same portion of the world’s population today (32%) as they did a century ago (35%). Source: Pew Research Maundy Thursday The Thursday before Easter, observed in the Christian Church as a commemoration of the Last Supper. Good Friday The day that Jesus Christ was executed on the cross at Calvary commonly thought of between 12 noon and 3pm. Easter Sunday The day that Jesus Christ arose from the dead, left the tomb where his body was buried and fulfilled the spiritual promise of salvation for all who believe in HIs sovereign power. Wikipedia notes that “over the course of his career, Pennebaker has studied the nature of physical symptoms, health consequences of secrets, expressive writing, and natural language, and has received grants from the National Science Foundation, The National Institutes of Health, the US Army Research Institute, and other federal agencies for studies in language, emotional and social dynamics.” So there mounting evidence that regular journal writing POSITIVELY impacts your mind, body and spirit! Daily stories of things that happen in your life each day are worth jotting down in a notebook to keep forever. Today we’ll talk about specific topics you can write about and how to organize your thoughts into sections or categories for easy recall. As I discussed in last week’s show...How you can capture your own stories, your joys and sorrows won’t take you more than 20 minutes each day. It’s the basis of my fourth book, My Personal Journal, Chronicle Your Life One Day At A Time. Listen to today’s show and find out how scientific data proves you should journal for long lasting health! =========== About Dr. James Pennebaker Source: Wikipedia James W. Pennebaker (born March 2, 1950) is an American social psychologist. He is the Centennial Liberal Arts Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. His research focuses on the relationship between natural language use, health, and social behavior, most recently "how everyday language reflects basic social and personality processes" Over the course of his career, Pennebaker has studied the nature of physical symptoms, health consequences of secrets, expressive writing, and natural language, and has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Army Research Institute, and other federal agencies for studies in language, emotion, and social dynamics. A pioneer of writing therapy, he has researched the link between language and recovering from trauma and been "recognized by the American Psychological Association as one of the top researchers on trauma, disclosure, and health." In particular, he finds a person's use of "low-level words," such as pronouns and articles, predictive of recovery as well as indicative of sex, age, and personality traits: "Virtually no one in psychology has realized that low-level words can give clues to large-scale behaviors." In the mid-1990s, he and colleagues developed the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC; pronounced "Luke"), a computerized text analysis program that outputs the percentage of words in a given text that fall into one or more of over 80 linguistic (e.g., first-person singular pronouns, conjunctions), psychological (e.g., anger, achievement), and topical (e.g., leisure, money) categories. It builds on previous research establishing strong links between linguistic patterns and personality or psychological state, but makes possible far more detailed results than did hand counts.Pennebaker and associates have used this tool to analyze the language of Al Qaeda leaders and of political candidates, particularly in the 2008 United States presidential election. He blogs with associates on what linguistic analysis says about political leaders, at Wordwatchers: Tracking the language of public figures, and Pennebaker Conglomerates, Inc. offers free LIWC-based text analysis tools online, including a language style matching calculator and a language-based application of the Thematic Apperception Test ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME! Not only is it the TRUE story of a free Black man kidnapped and thrown into slavery for 12 years before escaping to freedom. It’s a documented historical event because Northup chose to tell his OWN story shortly after gaining his freedom in 1853. Had he not had the boldness and courage of telling his story, his amazing journey might have been lost forever. Granted, your life is probably not as perilous as Solomon Northup. But you DO have stories that are worth documenting. Daily stories of things that happen in your life each day worth jotting down in a notebook to keep forever. And that is our topic today. How you can capture your own stories, your joys and sorrows in daily chunks that won’t take you more than 20 minutes each day. It’s the basis of my fourth book, My Personal Journal, Chronicle Your Life One Day At A Time. Listen to today’s show and find out the many ways you can journal and how it will enhance your own sense of empowerment and confidence in all that you do for yourself, for others and for the world around you. * * * About Carole's New Book: My Personal Journal Chronicle Your Life One Day At A Time Our lives are filled with countless stories, situations, routine tasks, triumphs and challenges that often go unnoticed as we race through our days and nights trying to make a difference in this world. To think that MY people...African Americans ignored their oppressed conditions to create some of the greatest inventions this country has ever known is simply miraculous. The player piano. the Golf Tee. The Door Knob and the Gas Mask....all the handiwork or Black people. And let’s now forget the countless inventions and patents of Dr. George Washington Carver. Simply astounding!! On today’s show we’ll explore the countless innovations of a people brought to the shores of America in chains, only to rise above their circumstances with creativity and talent so abundant in the Black community. If you want some inspiration so that YOU can discover your personal levels of innovation, today’s show is for YOU. ======== Dr. George Washington Carver Source: www.wikipedia.org George Washington Carver (by January 1864 – January 5, 1943), was an American scientist, botanist, educator, and inventor. The exact day and year of his birth are unknown; he is believed to have been born into slavery in Missouri in January 1864. Carver's reputation is based on his research into and promotion of alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes, which also aided nutrition for farm families. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops both as a source of their own food and as a source of other products to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts. He also developed and promoted about 100 products made from peanuts that were useful for the house and farm, including cosmetics, dyes, paints, plastics, gasoline, and nitroglycerin. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. During the Reconstruction-era South, monoculture of cotton depleted the soil in many areas. In the early 20th century, the boll weevil destroyed much of the cotton crop, and planters and farm workers suffered. Carver's work on peanuts was intended to provide an alternative crop. He was recognized for his many achievements and talents. In 1941, Time magazine dubbed Carver a "Black Leonardo." ============== Henrietta Bradberry Source: www.blackinventions.org A Chicago housewife during the 1940s received two patents. In May 1943, Henrietta Bradberry patented a bed rack that provided a space to hang shirts, trousers and other clothing worn so that air could freshen them after they had been worn. Then in December 1945, Mrs. Bradberry designed a waterproof pneumatically operated way to fire torpedoes under water from either undersea installations or submarines. Before here death on May 17, 1979, Mrs. Bradberry in an interview told that ideas just came to her and as a housewife she had time to work out the concepts to perfection and to the satisfaction of the patent office. She made numerous attempts through the effort and support of her patent attorney to find manufacturers or buyers for her patent rights, but unfortunately, that never occurred. Disenchanted, Henrietta Bradberry abandoned all efforts to gain economic benefit from her extraordinary talent. ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME! Necessity Is The Mother Of Invention. Black people have always been inventive, creative and industrious. Go on any African street corner today and you’ll find talented entrepreneurs selling, making and distributing their wares. That talent was expanded as Blacks were exported, sold and enslaved to distant shores. This industriousness continued in America where discrimination, slavery and Jim Crow never stomped out the willpower of Black people to create businesses. Fast forward to today’s Black economic trail and we celebrated several entrepreneurs at the February 11th Black History Breakfast held at the University of Massachusetts Boston Campus. Two of them share the stage as a powerful husband and wife team and owners of separate businesses. Today we recognize the accomplishments of Patricia Bonner DuVal and John Aki Duval. Patricia Bonner-DuVal is a community activist who has dedicated her life to opening doors of opportunity for Boston’s vulnerable populations of youth, women of color and the elderly. She is the president of Bonner Enterprises a fundraising firm, with a track record of raising an average of $2 million every year since the firm was launched in 1999. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Tufts University in Medford. Patricia has a Bachelor of Science degree from Lincoln University and a Master in Education from Harvard University. She has received 16 community service awards from the State, City and several non-profit organizations. Patricia serves as a member of the Grimes-King Foundation’s Board of Directors and Trustee of the Josephine B. Dial Trust. She is married to John Aki DuVal and has two adult daughters. John Aki DuVal and his sister Beth Deare launched JAD Fine Upholstery Company in 1990. Serving residents of the Greater Boston area JAD Fine Upholstery soon became the place to go for the very best craftsmanship available in the market place for exceptional upholstery of all types of furniture in Marine, Residential and Commercial environments. After the passing of Beth Deare, John Aki DuVal sustained the excellence of the firm’s work as the President and Director of Operations for the firm since its inception. If your desire is to have the furniture you own repaired to its original form, or if you are ready to step out into the world of custom goods made specifically for you with the care, please give us a call and see for yourself why the JAD difference can`t be beat for quality and price. ===================== Your Comments Are Welcome |
