The brainchild of my cousins, Theresa Johnson and Lula McKeever, the family roots are deeply intertwined in slavery, suffering and salvation. William and Louisa Gaines were the original slave couple, allowed to stay together as they raised their 14 children in Georgia starting in the late 1700s. Today’s show will discuss the many ways that your family reunion can serve as the principal method to archive your family history. We’ll also use the Gaines model of knowledge transfer, where one family member passes the family leadership from one generation to the next. Big or small... family reunions, gatherings and celebrations are excellent ways to provide a long lasting thread of family stability to your immediate and expanded family unit. ==================== About The Gaines Family Source: 21 Ways To Bring Multiculturalism To Your Job Your Home and Your Community The Gaines Family In The Shadows Of American History The pieces started coming together more than 25 years ago when The Gaines Family of Columbus, Georgia began a new tradition of gathering every other summer to connect, reflect and pay tribute to a 200 year African American story. The Gaines Family members are the original descendants of 18th century William and Louisa Gaines, two slaves on a colonial Georgia plantation who fell in love and were allowed to marry. In fact during an era when slave families were routinely broken up and sold to other plantations, this couple was allowed to stay together and raise their 14 children. One of their 14 children was Gus Gaines, who also had 14 children. From that lineage ultimately came Sarah Gaines Charleston, my maternal great grand mother. Her parents and her relatives ultimately owned 600 acres of sweet Georgia land shortly after the Civil War had ended. When the US Government came knocking on their door, asking to buy great grandmother Sarah’s land by imminent domain at the turn of the 20th Century, her family patriotically sold their precious property so that the now famous military base, Fort Benning, could be built. Her family pocketed the money, moved to nearby Columbus, Georgia and began sending the children to college. As a result, my own children and my brother’s daughter, Lauren Copeland Morgan, make up the fourth generation to attend and complete college. Build On A Strong Event Platform It’s quite alright to keep your family reunion event small for several years. Perhaps an evening gathering once every other year is sufficient. Remember you can always supplement your face to face meeting with a social media presence (Facebook), conference calls and newsletters (electronic or print). When your family is ready expand your annual or biannual gathering to a full day event or a weekend reunion. Last week’s trip to San Diego completed the 16th (or 17th) time I have attended the national convention of the National Speakers Association. I joined in 1995 and immediately registered for that year’s convention held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With a few exceptions I have attended the convention each year. During last week’s event, the leadership team announced an association name change: Old name: National Speakers Association to New Name: Platform. The dramatic change has certainly caused some debate within our circles, but at least I am glad to have heard the announcement in person instead of third hand. The workshops, early morning sessions, late night community forums and hallway chatter made for a value added experience. The trip provided the opportunity for me to keep current within my industry and reinforce connections with other speakers, thought leaders, trainers, consultants and entertainers who like me are engaged in the business of communications. Additionally I learned about the latest technology and reviewed new avenues of income designed to keep this business competitive and relevant to our client base. JUSTIFIED COSTS The NSA/Platform national convention was NOT an inexpensive investment. With airfare, hotel, and a significant registration fee, attending the convention in San Diego put a dent in my budget. But the return on my investment will more than make up for the money I spent to get to California and back. The same holds true for you and your industry. Be it the National Education Association convention, the National Black MBA Association, The National Bar Association or the American Medical Association...industry conventions keep you up to date on the latest trends and techniques in your field of work. And it’s no different when attending social justice conventions, faith based conferences or sporting conventions. These national and often international experiences are designed to raise the level of awareness and advocacy for each attendee who will then take home the new knowledge and share with others. All conventions are different. NSA/Platform conventions combined education with entertainment. Because most attendees are bankrolling the cost, they’ll get up at 6am grab breakfast and pack the morning general assembly to hear the headline speaker of the hour. Very few NSA/Platform attendees skip a day’s worth of sessions that they financed themselves. When it’s your money that underwrites your convention costs, you’ll do what it takes to fully engage in the experience each and every day that you’re there. AFTER YOU GET HOME THE FOLLOW UP BEGINS And then it’s the job of following up on all of the business card leads, website downloads and congratulatory emails that will keep you occupied for the month after the annual convention has ended. That’s what I am doing now that I’ve returned from San Diego and ramping up for the rest of 2014. And when I watch last week’s video clips and look at countless photos, I realize that my business development investment was well worth the price. Whatever your career path, business journey or professional pursuit, an annual convention can energize your materials, keep you fresh, enhance your perspective and help you maintain your competitive advantage. So...start now to save for next year’s conference/convention/seminar for your industry. Attend. Get involved. Offer your leadership. Volunteer. All will help move you to higher heights in your field of study, business, profession or career path. Happy Travels To You! ====================================== Your Comments Are Welcome. Two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves in the confederate states, the hold out White plantation owners grudgingly and reluctantly gave in to the pressures of the US government, but held onto the racial hatred embedded in their hearts. Fast forward to 2006, a short eight years ago, when Black financial tycoon, Mellody Hobson, was mistaken for kitchen help while in New York City on a campaign fundraising trip for Harold Ford. The manager who made that awful blunder needed to clean out the cobwebs and realize that Black people have significantly advanced since the rough-shod days of our Civil War past. Mellody recently created a TED Talk about her experience, urging her audience to move from being color blind to becoming color brave. We’ll talk about this lingering issue with veteran consultant and former Chair of the National Black MBA Association Bill Wells, Jr. It’s an American issue that simply won’t go away. ======================= About Juneteenth Day Source: www.juneteenth.com Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. ========================== About Mellody Hobson Source: http://www.arielinvestments.com Mellody Hobson is responsible for firm-wide management and strategic planning, overseeing all operations outside of research and portfolio management. As a passionate advocate for investor education, she is a spokesperson for the Ariel/Hewitt Study: 401(k) Plans in Living Color and the Ariel Black Investor Survey, both of which examine investing patterns among minorities. Mellody is chairman of the board for DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. as well as a director of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. and Starbucks Corporation. Her community outreach includes serving as chairman of After School Matters, a non-profit that provides Chicago teens with high quality, out-of-school time programs. Today I’ll share my thoughts and new knowledge about the world’s second largest country and it biggest democracy....INDIA. The land of Hindus, Muslims, Christians and other faiths living side by side... where coexistence is the better option for all. The land where the rights of women are still being fought and where basic essentials that we, in America completely take for granted are still a luxury for more than 53% of the Indian people. It was an extraordinary trip for me that I am still savoring....still reflecting. And it was a trip that has me searching for new answers, new meaning, new relevance as I connect the dots between the Indians I now call my brothers and sisters..OVER THERE....and South Asian Indians I know and respect here in America. This is only the beginning of my journey to India. It’s one that you won’t want to miss. And we’ll also talk with award winning PR guru Terrie Williams and her continued advocacy for mental health issues in African American communities across the nation. India Fact Sheet
Source: US Department of State Although India occupies only 2.4% of the world's land area, it supports over 15% of the world's population. Only China has a larger population. India's median age is 25, one of the youngest among large economies. About 70% live in more than 550,000 villages, and the remainder in more than 200 towns and cities. Over the thousands of years of its history, India has been invaded from the Iranian plateau, Central Asia, Arabia, Afghanistan, and the West; Indian people and culture have absorbed and modified these influences to produce a remarkable racial and cultural synthesis. Religion, caste, and language are major determinants of social and political organization in India today. However, with more job opportunities in the private sector and better chances of upward social mobility, India has begun a quiet social transformation in this area. The government has recognized 18 official languages; Hindi, the national language, is the most widely spoken, although English is a national lingua franca. Although 81% of its people are Hindu, India also is the home of more than 138 million Muslims--one of the world's largest Muslim populations. The population also includes Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis. The Hindu caste system reflects Indian occupational and socially defined hierarchies. Ancient Sanskrit sources divide society into four major categories, priests (Brahmin), warriors (Ksha-triya), traders/artisans (Vaishya) and farmers/laborers (Shudra). Although these categories are understood throughout India, they describe reality only in the most general terms. They omit, for example, the tribal people and those outside the caste system formerly known as "untouchables”,or Dalits. In reality, Indian society is divided into thousands of jatis--local, endogamous groups based on occupation--and organized hierarchically according to complex ideas of purity and pollution. Discrimination based on caste is officially illegal, but remains prevalent, especially in rural areas. Nevertheless, the government has made strong efforts to minimize the importance of caste through active affirmative action and social policies. Moreover, caste is often diluted if not subsumed in the economically prosperous and heterogeneous cities, where an increasing percentage of India's population lives. In the countryside, expanding education, land reform and economic opportunity through access to information, communication, transport, and credit are helping to lessen the harshest elements of the caste system. ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME! The unheated small cottage his grandmother acquired would become a place of summer refuge for Kevin and his extended family for decades. Now he has done what most people only talk about doing: Kevin has published a new book about his summer adventures on this celebrated Massachusetts island. Before President Bill Clinton’s summer vacations...before President Barack Obama’s summer vacation...there were Kevin Parham’s summer vacations on the “Vineyard.” We’ll talk to Kevin on today’s show and preview what millions will experience from Gay Head to Edgartown to the Inkwell straight through Labor Day. It’s all about Martha’s Vineyard on today’s edition of Focus On Empowerment. Purchase Kevin's book at www.thevineyardweknew.com From Wikipedia: Martha's Vineyard (Wampanoag: Noepe) is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, known for being an affluent summer colony. It includes the smaller Chappaquiddick Island, which until 2007 was part of the same land mass before becoming detached by a storm. Often called just "The Vineyard," the island has a land area of 100 square miles (260 km2). It is the 58th largest island in the United States and the third largest on the East Coast of the United States. It is also the largest island not connected to mainland by a bridge or tunnel on the East Coast of the United States. It is located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as a part of Dukes County, which also includes Cuttyhunk, as well as the island of Nomans Land, which is a US Wildlife preserve, and was a US Naval practice bombing range until 1996. The Vineyard was also home to one of the earliest known deaf communities in the United States; consequently, a special sign language, Martha's Vineyard Sign Language (MVSL), developed on the island. The 2010 census reported a year-round population of 16,535 residents; however, the summer population can swell to more than 100,000 people. About 56% of the Vineyard’s 14,621 homes are seasonally occupied. Martha's Vineyard is primarily known as a summer colony, and is accessible only by boat and air. However, its year-round population has grown considerably since the 1960s. A study by the Martha's Vineyard Commission found that the cost of living on the island is 60 percent higher than the national average and housing prices are 96 percent higher. A study of housing needs by the Commission found that the average weekly wage on Martha's Vineyard was “71 per cent of the state average, the median home price was 54 per cent above the state’s and the median rent exceeded the state’s by 17 per cent.” ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME! Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== The code of racism was disrupted on Tuesday April 29th when a rookie commissioner brought down a titan sports owner in a single press conference. Adam Silver, barely on the job for two months, announced that veteran owner of the LA Clippers and billionaire Donald Tokowitz Sterling was banned for life from the NBA and ordered to pay a $2.5 million dollar fine for his private comments that spoke volumes about his contempt and hatred of Black people. Today’s show will not argue the pros and cons of private conversations caught on tape. It will analyze the deeply embedded Code of Segregation so damaging to the fabric of the American infrastructure. We will listen to two audio recordings of Donald Sterling and his mixed race girlfriend V. Stiviano in an attempt to assess why a man who makes millions off of Black people hates them so deeply. In the eyes of a racist, this is “just the culture.” It’s the way it is, the way is always has been, the way it should remain. However, if we, as nation are to move this country forward, this racism mentality must be crushed, defeated and permanently not allowed to see the light of day. And as an African American thought leader, just dismissing Sterling’s comments as simply fool hearty is just not good enough. It must be called racist, rejected and abolished. Tough talk for a very tough topic. =================== Timeline of Events: Source: http://dayandadream.com/2014/04/26/donald-sterling-racist-timeline 1983: Then Villanova head coach Rollie Massimino had enjoyed success in the Big East but the Clippers came courting him to be their head coach. Sterling, who had purchased the team in 1982, met Massimino in 1983 after Massimino had already met with Clipper management who loved him. Sterling’s meeting with Massimino pretty much ends the moment he shows up with a mistress (he’s been married since 1957 and his wife is suing girlfriend for sleeping with him), champagne and asks Massimino, “I wanna know why you think you can coach these niggers.” Needless to say Massimino went back to Villanova and wound up winning the 1985 national championship. 2003: In sworn testimony Sterling is on record in regards to Koreans, blacks, children and more about living in his properties. Among the lowlights – “That’s because of all the blacks in this building, they smell, they’re not clean.” [...] “Is she one of those black people that stink? [...] Just evict the bitch.” Sterling settled. 2003: In another case, this time regarding an old mistress, Sterling testified that he paid her every time they had sex. “When you pay a woman for sex, you are not together with her. You’re paying her for a few moments to use her body for sex. Is it clear? Is it clear?” See? Not just a racist but a sexist womanizer as well. The list goes on and on, including Baylor saying Sterling likened the job to “a vision of a Southern plantation” type structure. Yeah, let’s just say “The Donald” is a rather deplorable human being. ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME! How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live???
