What's left are five to six island countries that bear the deep scars from the ravages of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. One island country was completely destroyed. Some of the others will need to rebuild their infrastructures, community support systems, and economies for years to come. In that latter category desperately in need is Dominica who felt the brunt of Category 5 Hurricane Maria on September 18th. They weren't even back on their feet from Tropical Story Erika that hit the island in 2015. Now the need is greater than ever. Today's show will help you assess what happened to Dominica and what 's being done to bring back its communities, housing stock, and the overall economy. Dominica is a different island nation from the Dominican Republic, but equally important when it comes to the cleanup efforts now underway. We'll talk to two leaders of the ex-pat community from Dominica to find out what happened and how you can help. Today's Guests Are Pastor Cuthbert Joseph and his sister Helena Joseph who live in Boston, but are official representatives of their native Dominica. Pastor Joseph is the official Spokesperson and Consulate Appointee for Dominica's Relief Effort in Boston. Helena Joseph is the Marketing and Public Relations Committee Chair for the Relief Effort. For more information, Visit www.bostonfordominica.org. Dominica’s Recovery post Hurricane MariaIntroduction The Commonwealth of Dominica is the largest and most northerly of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. The island has an area of 790 square kilometres and has approximately 91 miles of coastline. Only 29 miles long and 16 miles wide, the island is situated on the inner volcanic arc of the Lesser Antilles and is the most mountainous of the Eastern Caribbean Islands. The Commonwealth of Dominica is a middle income country with a population of 72,660 persons of mainly African descent (86.7% ) and the indigenous Kalinago people. (About 1000 Kalingo people live in Dominica. They are the last surviving indigenous people in the Caribbean.) There is an overwhelming concentration of the population along the entire coastline, particularly along the more hospitable West coast. Life expectancy at birth is estimated to be 77.5 years and a per capita GDP of US$ 8,066. Background Dominica’s Economy has largely been agriculturally based, although over the past several years Tourism has risen in importance as a major income generator for the island. The Government of Dominica, through the Ministry of Health provides health services to the population through the one main tertiary hospital- the Princess Margaret Hospital located in the capital Roseau as well as through 52 health centers strategically located within the several villages around the island. Like every other nation, the escalating cost of health care and the ever-growing medical needs of the population have posed a serious challenge for the Ministry of Health in terms of financing and allocation of scarce resources. Current Situation The people of Dominica have experienced a catastrophic disaster no one imagined could unfold in our lifetime. On September18, 2017 Hurricane Maria annihilated my homeland of Dominica. The category 5 hurricane showed absolutely no mercy to the island, causing widespread damage in every community, killing at least 70 people with several still missing, either washed away or buried under debris. Indiscriminate in its destruction, the Category 5 storm with winds exceeding 160 miles per hour (mph) ripped off roofs and tore apart 95% all buildings including homes, hospitals and businesses. The destructive winds and heavy rains also caused severe flooding, wiped out roads and bridges, knocked down power lines and cut off water supplies and totally disabled the communications system. The extent of the destruction is staggering – nearly every home was savagely hit, leaving countless families with young children homeless and in dire need of food and water and medical care. The roof of the main hospital was torn away, the ICU was completely destroyed and patient care has been compromised. Even shelters were ripped off their foundations as their debris littered the island like confetti. Many communities are now unrecognizable. Of major concern is the extensive damage to the infrastructure of our country and the subsequent homelessness. Our immediate relief efforts to assist Dominica in its recovery include donation drives, crowd funding and benefit events. With other news making headlines, we are concerned that those who can help us may forget about Dominica. This is why we are reaching out to you to help us spread the word about situation on the ground in Dominica. ABOUT BOSTON FOR DOMINICA Boston for Dominica is a registered 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization in Boston, Massachusetts. It was created in 2015 by Dominicans and friends of Dominica working together to coordinate efforts in response to the devastation of Tropical Storm Erika. Our goal is to provide assistance regarding high priority needs for the people of Dominica, particularly after natural disasters. The Dominica Ambassador to the UN has officially authorized Boston for Dominica to operate as the official relief entity in Boston, MA on behalf of the government of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

CLICK HERE FOR THE LINK To think that the new movie, Detroit, represented a comprehensive look at a terrible event that took place in July of 1967 is only to give credence to part of a complex story. Yes, see the movie, but realize it’s only covering a segment of a citywide episode in Detroit’s long history. I was born black hospital in Detroit and largely raised in a middle-class neighborhood on the city’s west side. My story is what the movie didn’t capture as it opened the closet door of a major metropolitan city at the cross roads of civil rights, Vietnam, and unrest everywhere. Today’s show is a personal one for me. And an opportunity to add layers of truth onto a movie that opened old wounds dating back more than 50 years. Dear Valued Reader:
As the wrath of Hurricane Harvey sends devastation to Texans in Rockport, Beaumont, Houston and other cities, towns and rural areas and soon to be parts of Louisiana, my thoughts and prayers go out to all impacted by this awful storm. It has now become a record-setting storm, hitting an all time rainfall record in the lower 48 states from a tropical cyclone (hurricane). With Hurricane Harvey reforming in the Gulf of Mexico and making landfall in the hours ahead, the overall devastation has yet to be determined. What offers a ray of hope is the unity we see coming from the Texas neighborhoods where every day people are reaching out to neighbors, friends, strangers and those in need of help, encouragement, and bravery. They are working with first responders, police, rescue personnel firefighters, and even the "Cajun Navy" to pluck families from rooftops and ensure that others make it safely to nearby boats and ultimately dry land. Like many others, I vividly remembered Hurricane Katrina in 2005. My friends were impacted by that awful storm. I was one of many volunteers who drove to a nearby Massachusetts air base to greet our soaking wet Lousiana guests in the middle of the night. Seeing the television images this week of those in the Houston convention center brings back those memories. Below is a list of places where you can donate money and other items to help the people of Texas. And while we're thinking of their suffering, let's now forget the suffering of others outside of the United States who experience cyclones, earthquakes, mudslides and other natural disasters that only get a third of the television coverage that Hurricane Harvey is getting. Those victims need our concerns, too. In the days ahead, may the sunshine replace the rain and may the spirit of neighborhood cooperation remind us that together we can unite in facing the challenges and obstacles in our nation. =================== Where You Can Help The City Of Boston: Mayor Marty Walsh’s announced a city-sponsored “Help for Houston” drive this week to collect clothing, toiletries, food, and other items to send to those impacted by Harvey. It did stay calm and the day was declared a big success for those on the side of social justice, equity and real freedom. I witnessed the August 19th Boston Protest March and Rally with my own eyes at Boston Common. 40,000 strong. And I witnessed the quiet escape of the 50 or so alt-right Boston Free Speech rally participants get escorted off the Parkman Bandstand by the police to ensure their safety. Today’s show will give you all of the details of why this modern day civil rights march was indeed the right thing to do and why the world needed to see it happen in Boston. About The March and Rally The Boston Free Speech Rally took place at the Boston Common on August 19, 2017 The organizers and participants were characterized as adherents of the alt-lite, a loosely organized right-wing political movement. Around 50 people attended the rally, and they were met by tens of thousands of counter-protesters.The rally was organized by John Medlar and others in the Boston Free Speech Coalition. It was intended to feature Kyle Chapman, Joe Biggs, Shiva Ayyadurai, and Samson Racioppi as speakers, although the rally ended before all of the speeches were made. Police erected barricades and blocked streets near the rally, and weapons of any kind were banned. The city planned for around 500 police officers to be present for the event. The alt-lite rally ended early, and all rally attendees left the Parkman Bandstand by 12:50 pm. Most of the planned speeches did not take place, although Republican Senate candidate Shiva Ayyadurai gave a speech to other rallygoers making reference to "fake news" describing the rally as a Nazi event. Samson Racioppi, who was scheduled to speak, said "I really think it was supposed to be a good event by the organizers, but it kind of fell apart." The rally drew only a handful of attendees, while between 30,000 and 40,000 people participated in the counter-protest. The counter protesters were organized by Black Lives Matter, various Faith-based organizations, trade unions, the NAACP and other social justice groups. The event was largely peaceful, with no injuries reported as of the afternoon of August 19. A total of 33 people were arrested, largely for disorderly conduct. There were a few arrests for assaults on police officers. During a news conference in the afternoon of August 19, Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans said that some rocks and bottles filled with urine had been thrown at police officers but that over all there was "very little injury and property damage." 8/17/2017 Black White And Brown in the Red White and Blue: Finding Our Voices When White Supremacy Comes CallingRead Now

Yes, some people are afraid to voice their views for fear of reprisal and revenge. Some grimace in disagreement of what happen in Charlottesville, yet secretly applaud the actions of the alt right groups. Others look on apathetically, waiting for the more vocal ones to represent them in action. And some boldly and triumphantly speak out against the wrongs of discrimination, hate, and the symbolism of Confederate statues, knowing that backlash may await them in the face of their fear. Where are you in this national debate that is literally tearing our country apart? Are you boldly speaking out or waiting by the sidelines? Are you angry, happy, insulted or confused? What is YOUR position on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and class issues? And can you defend your positions in today’s fractured society? We’ll examine the many ways that freedom of speech is being cross examined in America and what YOU can do about it. |
