As we reflect on the 44th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination (April 4, 1968) why is race such a potent factor in how decisions are made, who gets arrested, and who gets murdered in this country? Two special guests are featured on today's show to discuss this case and these tough issues. Ed Primeau is an audio and video forensic expert, and was recently featured on Rev. Al Sharpton's television program on MSNBC. Ed analyzed the 911 tape that captured the screams during the February 2012 Trayvon Martin shooting. His analysis finds that the screams did NOT belong to the shooter, George Zimmerman. Our second guest is bank executive turned community activist Monalisa Smith. The tragic murder of her 18 year old nephew drove Smith to launch a non profit activist group that she now heads: Mothers For Justice and Equality. (www.mothersforjusticeandequality.org) Although my own 17 year old son died of a tragic car accident in 1997, I deeply identify with the loss of yet another African American young man who will never reach his manhood. Far too many Black youth are NOT reaching their full potential, as their lives are snuffed out in the blink of an eye. Today's show will look at the evidence and examine the race factor in the death of Trayvon Martin. About Mothers For Justice and Equality (MJE) MJE was founded in the fall of 2010 in response to the murders of young people in the City of Boston. A group of women, each of whom had suffered losses of children to violence, came together with the vision of a world in which it is never normal or acceptable for children to be murdered. MJE’s purpose is to unite the community in an effort to end neighborhood violence by engaging mothers in solving the crisis of violence on our streets. Like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, MJE believes that, if given the right tools, mothers can become catalysts for change at home and advocates for change in their neighborhoods. The Boston based organization is headed by Monalisa Smith. Ms. Smith is also the Vice President of Community Relations for Citizens Bank. ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live??? One of the leading experts in the field is Boston based Crystal Johnson, founder and principal of ISES, Integrative Sustainability & Environmental Solutions. We'll ask Crystal to give definition to all things "green" and help us to understand the economy and political implications of environmental sustainability in a throw away world. Just what happens to all of those computers, once they're no longer in use? What landfill...or developing country are they shipped off to? And what about all the plastic bags that don't make it to the recycle bin? What role to communities of color play in the Green Movement? And most importantly, what can ONE person to to push the Green Movement forward? We'll also talk to Crystal about her upcoming 3rd Annual Sustainable Economy Conference (SEC) set for April 30th. Find out more about Crystal Johnson and her work at www.isesplanning.com. Crystal Johnson Bio Crystal Johnson launched ISES after almost two decades of educating diverse industries about how to best reduce their impact on the environment. I was always mildly interested in learning more about the topic, but just didn't have that "push" to dig deeper. So when the invitation came, I decided to give it a try. With a living room filled with friends and colleagues, I offered up my right thumb to Dr. Beth Sommers, who stuck her magic needles in the right spots and minutes later the nagging carpal tunnel in that thumb had decreased substantially. And it stayed that way for several days. That was my introduction to acupuncture. And Beth Sommers, PhD, MPH, LAc joins me on today's show to demystify acupuncture to our listening audience and explain why it has become a popular alternative to traditional Western medicine for many around the world. Dr. Sommers is the Director of Research and Education for Pathways to Wellness/AIDS Care Project, a non profit organization in Boston. Shel will also talk about the other services offered by the organization, including shiatu and Chinese herbs. Join in the conversation as we explore alternative medicine during Women's History Month. Pathways to Wellness, Inc. is a nonprofit organization committed to providing equal access to high quality holistic care including acupuncture, shiatsu, and Chinese herbs. After taking care of children, eldery parents, job responsibilities, the church, the community, friends, and a wide range of extended family issues, there's often not much left for women of all stripes...especially Black Women. We'll explore this important topic with leading expert Byllye Avery and a new book on the subject, Health First! A Black Woman's Wellness Guide. Byllye Avery is a well respected women's advocate and founder of the Black Women's Health Imperative. Then we'll take a walk back in time and pay tribute to Ellen Craft who staged one of the most daring and dangerous escapes to freedom in American history. ================ Ellen Craft (1826-1891) One of the most ingenious escapes was that of a married couple from Georgia, Ellen and William Craft, who traveled in first-class trains, dined with a steamboat captain and stayed in the best hotels during their escape to Philadelphia and freedom in 1848. Ellen, a quadroon with very fair skin, disguised herself as a young white cotton planter traveling with his slave (William). It was William who came up with the scheme to hide in plain sight, but ultimately it was Ellen who convincingly masked her race, her gender and her social status during their four-day trip. Despite the luxury accommodations, the journey was fraught with narrow escapes and heart-in-the-mouth moments that could have led to their discovery and capture. Courage, quick thinking, luck and “our Heavenly Father,” sustained them, the Crafts said in Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom, the book they wrote in 1860 chronicling the escape. Pass the cookies please!!! ======================== About Women’s History Month Before the 1970’s, the topic of women’s history was largely missing from general public consciousness. To address this situation, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women initiated a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978 and chose the week of March 8 to coincide with International Women’s Day. The celebration was met with positive response, and schools began to host their own Women’s History Week programs. The next year, leaders from the California group shared their project at a Women’s History Institute at Sarah Lawrence College. Other participants not only became determined to begin their own local Women’s History Week projects but also agreed to support an effort to have Congress declare a national Women’s History Week. In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) cosponsored the first Joint Congressional Resolution proclaiming a “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the celebration to the entire month of March. Since then, the National Women’s History Month Resolution has been approved every year with bipartisan support in both the House and Senate. And what are the chances that someone in your family carries the Sickle Cell Trait? We'll talk with Rev. Ronald Stephenson, M.Div, the President and Founder of the Greater Boston Sickle Cell Disease Association and learn more about their upcoming February 26th Day of Prayer. Then we'll learn more about the various voter restriction laws passed between 2010 and 2011 that directly affect African American voters across the country. Many of these laws will have a major impact on the 2012 presidential election. Stay tuned to today's show. About Sickle Cell Source: Center For Disease Control What Is Sickle Cell Disease? Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. Healthy red blood cells are round and they move through small blood vessels carrying oxygen to all parts of the body. In SCD, the red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a “sickle”. Sickle cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood • cells. Sickle cells can get stuck in small blood vessels and block the flow • of blood and oxygen to organs in the body. These blockages cause repeated episodes of severe pain, organ damage, serious infections, or even stroke. What Causes Sickle Cell Disease? SCD is inherited in the same way that people get the color of their eyes, skin, and hair. A person with SCD is born with it. People cannot catch SCD from being around a person who has it. Who Is Affected By Sickle Cell Disease? It is estimated that SCD affects 90,000 to 100,000 people in the United States, mainly Blacks or African Americans. The disease occurs among about 1 of every 500 Black or African- American births and among about 1 out of every 36,000 Hispanic- American births. SCD affects millions of people throughout the world and is particularly common among those whose ancestors come from sub- Saharan Africa; regions in the Western Hemisphere (South America, the Caribbean, and Central America); Saudi Arabia; India; and Mediterranean countries such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy. ====================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live???
