And she’s only 20 years old. Multi-talented Grace Kelly knows how to bring sweet music to our ears. Recognized as a saxophonist, singer, composer, arranger, songwriter, and recording artist with talent like no other at her age Grace Kelly has performed and recorded with the likes of Lee Konitz, Wynton Marsalis, Phil Woods, Hank Jones, The Boston Pops, Harry Connick Jr. among many others. She has appeared at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Symphony Hall in Boston as well as a leader in over 500 jazz clubs and festivals worldwide, including the 2010 Newport Jazz Festival where she opened and the 2010 Montreal Jazz Festival and will return to both festivals again in 2011. Jazz Great Wynton Marsalis said “Grace Kelly plays with intelligence, wit and feeling. She has a great amount of natural ability and the ability to adapt. That is the hallmark of a first-class jazz musician.” With SEVEN CDs to her credit, Grace is preparing for another exciting benefit concert on September 28th at Bethel AME Church in Boston. The Concert is a musical tribute to the civil rights and anti-apartheid movements. We will also dive right into presidential politics and discuss the latest campaign tactics between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney. Voter suppression laws in states including Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Ohio could have heavy consequences in communities of color. And the perspective of some voters who don’t think President Obama is “one of us,” including the Birthers question whether a Black president will ever be accepted in all communities throughout America. The ultimate question: Why does RACE still matter in the United States of America??? --------------------------- Carole’s New Book Is Here: 21 Ways To Bring Multiculturalism To Your Job Your Home And Your Community Carole’s new book can be purchased on Amazon.com. ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live??? One of those factors is politics, that dirty little word that often polarizes us whether intentional or not. Our entire planet is impacted by politics and the people who play politics on our behalf. I wrote my book in part to give each reader resources, websites and materials to intelligently decide which political issues matter most in their lives. The book provides a practical guide to understanding diversity, multiculturalism and yes, politics. This week and next we’ll explore the ways that you can develop your own perspective on multiculturalism, keeping politics in clear view. Explore your own political viewpoints in the pages of my new book. This week’s spotlight is on the Democratic National Convention that ends tonight with President Barack Obama’s nomination acceptance speech. Listen to my show, buy my book, then watch the convention highlights either live or online later. You hold the key to greater understanding of the intersection of global diversity and politics. We will also talk about the upcoming September 15th Sickle Celebration In The Park, sponsored by The Greater Boston Sickle Cell Disease Association. Dr. Patricia Kavanaugh, Board Chair of GBSCDA, is my special guest. --------------------------- Carole’s book can be purchased on Amazon.com. ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live??? Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== Full disclosure: Joshua Smith is my great nephew by marriage. It’s only the beginning of why he is my 9 year old HERO of the year and a great role model for other young boys to follow. A few weeks ago Joshua’s parents, Rhonda and Flynn Smith explained why he couldn’t play in the neighborhood park. Rhonda, who I have known since she was two, reluctantly told her oldest son that the park needed cleaning up, needed the lawn mowed, and that city was broke. Instead of shrugging it off and watching the city sink further into financial despair, Joshua took action. He devised a short term cash flow solution for the city: a lemonade stand. His goal: raise $1000 and give the money to the city of Detroit. Unlike other lemonade stands that children have devised for countless years across the the world, this one went viral. A week long experiment went viral in a matter of days. Joshua, his two younger brothers and friends pulled out all stops and raised over $3000 in seven short days! Detroit, suburban Detroiters, and even the University of Michigan basketball team reached deep in their pockets, drove to Joshua’s house and gave from their hearts. Joshua gave ALL of the money to the city of Detroit. He also won a $2000 scholarship for his effort, and a volunteer organization (Detroit Mower Gang), descended on the part, cut the grass and cleaned it up for free. Every major media outlet in metro Detroit picked up the story. But it gets better! Joshua was featured on CNN, ABC News and Time Magazine, dubbed the “wonder kid.” He COMPLETELY dispels the stereotype of my hometown. Joshua was born into an intact African American family. His parents are married, live in the city and are deeply religious college graduates. And they LOVE Detroit... so much so that the love came through in the ACTIONS of their 9 year old son. I am telling everyone I know about Joshua Smith. I hope you will listen to this interview, share it and inspire other children around the world to take positive action even when the stakes are high. ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live??? Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== My American roots go back seven generations...so I am going to talk tough about MY country. We have FAILED to reign in our home grown enemies. Throughout the decades violence has plagued our country. But now the ability to buy guns online or in gun shops and use these weapons to wage mass murder is simply outrageous. A few weeks ago a crazed doctoral student opened fire on innocent movie goers in Colorado. Now just days ago while we celebrated Olympic victories of our talented athletes, a Neo-Nazi army veteran walked into a peaceful Sikh temple in Oak Creek ,Wisconsin and killed six people before cowardly turning the gun on himself. I suspect that his racism was so twisted that he thought the Sikh community was the same as the Muslim community, since their turbans brought out his racism. The larger question is why isn’t more being done to track down and curtail the destruction of our domestic terrorists who luck in villages, cities and towns throughout this country? They are lone wolves, destructive, dangerous and sooooooo wrong about the ethnic and cultural complexities of our nation. Joining us from Washington DC to talk about this week’s tragedy and the impact to the Sikh community is Dr. Gurmit Singh Aulakh, President of the Council of Khalistan. It’s the multicultural conversation we need to have every week until we put a lid on the dangerous domestic terrorists in our midst. ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live??? It didn’t take me long to become an enthusiastic fan. After all her name is Gabrielle, Gabby for short, just like my 16 month old granddaughter. Her amazing talent was on full display throughout the Olympics, and she gave the Black community throughout the world new reasons to cheer about victories in the tightest of circumstances.
Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas is our newest American “shero.” At the young age of 16, she has shattered the elite club and entered the world of Gold. Gold Medalist for Women’s Team Final in gymnastics. And Gabby made history as the first Black woman to win GOLD in the tougher than tough Women’s Individual All-Around Final. One of my church members emailed the victory announcement when Gabby won the individual Gold, and we were jubilant with the shockingly surprising news. Aly Raisman was the favored athlete to take Gold in that exercise. Aly was also a native of Needham, Massachusetts, and our local media was all over the story. But in a twist of fate, and scoring measured to the fraction of a second, it was Gabby’s amazing performances that pushed her past her teammate. She outperformed the Russians, the Chinese, the British, the Italians, The Japanese, and the great Romanians. An amazing victory for a young Black girl making her first trip to the Olympics. I absolutely refuse to get caught up in the nonsense about her hair or the color of her outfits. Those social media conversations are driven by “haters” whose personal performance would be laughed straight out of London. If we get bogged down at that level of stupidity, we’ll missed the meaning of Gabby’s Gold Medal performances. Yes, she didn’t medal on the Women’s Beam Final. And I salute Aly Raisman for winning Gold on the Women’s Floor Exercises. It’s just the sweet victory of winning the coveted Individual All-Around Final that makes Gabby’s profile shine so brightly. I remember past games dominated by Romanian divas and other Eastern European gymnastic queens. They were brilliant in their grace and agility. When Mary Lou Retton won Gold in 1984, she shattered the stranglehold on the sport and foreshadowed Gold victories of US athletes Carly Patterson (2004) Nastia Liukin (2008) and now Gabby Douglas. Winning Gold, Silver or Bronze can be fleeting, and media attention can be short lived. At 16 Gabby will undoubtedly mature and perfect her routines in the next eight years. I fully expect her to compete in in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil and the 2020 Olympics (city yet to be named). My prayer is that Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas will become a household name throughout the world. I want her sleeper victory to empower young girls around the world to never stop believing in themselves. May Gabby Douglas become the new role model of grace under fire, brilliance in victory and perseverance when the critics have written you off the predetermined list of elite winners. I salute Gabby Douglas and wish her only the best as a role model for us all. ================ Your Comments Are Welcome Focus On Empowerment can be heard every Thursday at 1pm Eastern.

Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== Summer is the season for all kinds of conventions and conferences in the African American community. We'll highlight two recently held meetings held in New Orleans and Nashville respectively. The National Association of Black Journalists National Conference (NABJ) held in New Orleans and The 49th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church held in Nashville. With thousands of members in attendance NABJ and the AME General Conference are examples of Black leadership in action. Award winning journalist Kelley Chunn gives us an update on the NABJ convention. Your host, Carole Copeland Thomas (whose AME roots go back seven generations) brings highlights of the AME Church General Conference. About The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of black journalists worldwide. Founded by 44 men and women on December 12, 1975, in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation. Many of NABJ's members also belong to one of the professional and student chapters that serve black journalists nationwide. ============== About The African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) The word African means that the church was organized by people of African descent and heritage. It does not mean that the church was founded in Africa, or that it was for persons of African descent only. The church's roots are of the family of Methodist churches. Methodism provides an orderly system of rules and regulations and places emphasis on a plain and simple gospel. Episcopal refers to the form of government under which the church operates. The chief executive and administrative officers of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination are the Bishops of the church. The AMEC grew out of the Free African Society (FAS) which Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, and others established in Philadelphia in 1787. When officials at St. George’s MEC pulled blacks off their knees while praying, FAS members discovered just how far American Methodists would go to enforce racial discrimination against African Americans. Hence, these members of St. George’s made plans to transform their mutual aid society into an African congregation. Although most wanted to affiliate with the Protestant Episcopal Church, Allen led a small group who resolved to remain Methodists. In 1794 Bethel AME was dedicated with Allen as pastor. To establish Bethel’s independence from interfering white Methodists, Allen, a former Delaware slave, successfully sued in the Pennsylvania courts in 1807 and 1815 for the right of his congregation to exist as an independent institution. Because black Methodists in other middle Atlantic communities encountered racism and desired religious autonomy, Allen called them to meet in Philadelphia to form a new Wesleyan denomination, the AME. www.nabj.org www.ame-church.com www.kelleychunn.com www.tellcarole.com ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live???
