Or why countless people are dying in the streets of Syria and Afghanistan to comprehend the complexity of the struggle for freedom. As a seventh generation American whose roots go back to slavery in the South, I don't take my freedom for granted and know the steep price paid to keep this country "free." We are FAR from perfect and have sooooo much to correct. We have complex diversity and multicultural dynamics to assess and implement throughout the 50 states and its territories. And issues of class and economic disparities and voting rights are center stage in our fight for equality and fairness. Despite the inequities, America is still a leading world power where liberty is valued and appreciated. We will salute the men and women past and present who paved the way to build the American society, and look at ways where we can get better in this never ending struggle to maintain "freedom for all." How do you assemble the cast, select the locations, buy the equipment, market the final product...and oh....by the way.... raise enough money to complete the project??? It takes more than just wishing about it to put all the puzzle pieces together AND ultimately make a profit for you and your investors. And if you’re an independent filmmaker, like our guest today, it takes guts and courage to actualize on your vision. On today’s show, we’ll meet Crosby Tatum, the creator of the forthcoming comedy, Surprise Surprise and we’ll learn how his idea as a budding filmmaker is about to take center stage in the months ahead. About The Producer My partner, Laz (Jacquin Holland), and I came up with Surprise, Surprise back in 2005 during a period we were coming up with new concepts to produce. Laz was thinking of a comedy movie where I (myself) would play a college student who uses an online dating website to find a girl that I like, but uses my best friend to serve as my proxy, to date this girl over fear of rejection by this girl, because of how I looked. During this time, I was really into Internet dating because with how I looked at the time, I felt as if I could never talk to a girl in person or get a girls number, much like my completely handsome best friend and partner. I was a 290 pound, unattractive, glasses-wearing, professional wrestling watching dweeb (in my eyes). You can say I had an extreme low-level of self-esteem, using the Internet to cover my introductions to women for me, rather than being a social butterfly. I was wrong on that one, personally. Matter of fact, as I was doing some research in regard to the movie, I learned some startling facts that really affected how I looked at myself, and also the main character from a writer's point of view, even to this day. Did you know that "Over 85% of the world suffers from some form of lacking low self-esteem (Dr. Joe Rubino - The Center for Personal Reinvention)." When I first read that statistic, it compelled me because, that's at least 85% of the world that has doubts and fears. That's at least 85% of people in the world who suffer from issues dealing with their own confidence, with how they look, how they act in public, and how they feel inside and out. Knowing these new facts and looking at my life in that retrospect, I felt as if that was a calling card to effectively write this screenplay in a manner that was both honest and truthful to myself and our team, and have a bit of self-exaggeration in comparison to my life as well. Laz was onto something, and I knew it as well. That's all it took for me to be on board with penning Surprise!!! ======================== About The Story CROSBY TYLOR, a smart, but socially-under confident, college student falls in danger of failing his Philosophy Class at the prestigious Adams University. To save his grades he reluctantly accepts a Final Class Project from his lovely, yet supportive teacher MS. LYMAN that charges him to find out What Attracts a Female to a Male from Different Philosophical Perspectives and Why? Its a project that will save Crosby's grades, and his scholarship...all in one fell swoop! Its also a project that no other student in Ms. Lyman's previous classes has been able to successfully complete in the past two years. All the while challenging Crosby to do something he has been afraid to do all of his life, and do right for that matter...SUCCESSFULLY TALK TO WOMEN. Hope however comes in the form of CYNTHIA SIMPSON, a beautiful, charming, yet naive woman from an online website called LOVERSPACE.COM, who wants to get to know Crosby based on his personality. Fearing what Cynthia might think about his looks, Crosby unwittingly CONS his ultra-sexy, womanizing best friend, J, into posing as himself to date Cynthia and grab data on her reactions toward J in a public setting for his project. As the great friend J is, he reluctantly goes along with Crosby's plans and hits it off with Cynthia, who is falling deep for J, while totally oblivious to Crosby's scheme. Meanwhile Crosby begins to fall deep for Cynthia based on their verbal interactions with each other, while a displeased J falls for a sweet and lovely small business owner named, AP, throwing Crosby's plan into deep peril. For others giftedness and talents are to be shared freely with the world. On today’s show we celebrate the latter with very special people who really want to make a difference in the world. Living a life of comfort wasn’t enough for our first guest. She’s gone on to start advocacy groups for women, was the Ambassador to Austria under the Clinton Administration and wrote a memorable musical piece during a personal transition in her life. That’s Swanee Hunt, a philanthropic globe trotter whose musical composition, The Witness Cantata will be performed this Sunday here in Boston. With Swanee is Rev. Dr. Gloria White Hammond, a driving force who empowers women from Sudan to South Boston. And we’ll pay tribute to diversity pioneer Dr. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr. who recently died suddenly in his home in Atlanta. Joining me to discuss his expansive life work is Mary-Frances Winters, and well respected diversity professional whose longtime membership in the Diversity Collegium provides the perspective of why Dr. Thomas mattered so much in the field of diversity and inclusion. A very special show with very gifted people who are making a difference in this world. ================== About Swanee Hunt Swanee Hunt is the daughter of oil magnate H.L. Hunt. Her mission is to achieve gender parity, especially as a means to end war and rebuild societies, as well as to alleviate poverty and other human suffering. At Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government Hunt is the Eleanor Roosevelt Lecturer in Public Policy. In 1997 she founded the Women and Public Policy Program, a research center concerned with domestic and foreign policy, which she directed for more than a decade. An expert on domestic policy and foreign affairs, Hunt is president of Hunt Alternatives Fund, through which she has committed more than $130 million in endowments and grants to provoking social change at local, national, and global levels. From 1993 to 1997, Hunt served as ambassador to Austria, where she hosted negotiations and international symposia focused on stabilizing the neighboring Balkan states. Later, she became a specialist in the role of women in post-communist Europe; in July 1997, she launched “Vital Voices: Women in Democracy,” a conference convening 320 women leaders in business, law, and politics from 39 countries. The meeting spawned the documentary Voices as well as an ensuing US State Department initiative, led by Madeleine Albright and Hillary Rodham Clinton, and later an NGO with the same name, co-chaired by Senators Clinton (D-NY) and Hutchison (R-TX). Hunt’s photographs have been exhibited in more than a dozen one-woman shows in five countries. Her musical composition, "The Witness Cantata," for five soloists and chorus, has had twelve performances in six cities. She was married for 25 years to Charles Ansbacher, international conductor and founder of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. Her world includes her three children, three grandchildren, a cat, a parrot, eight horses, and 76 bison (in absentia). Dr. Roosevelt Thomas is the third from the right. Date: 1999 or 2000 at one of our meetings in Northern California ![]() Because Of Him, Dignity For All People Spreads Worldwide... A Tribute To Diversity Pioneer The Late Dr. Roosevelt Thomas 1944 - 2013 by Carole Copeland Thomas, MBA, CDMP In the early 1990s when I was building my business and my diversity practice, I was invited to join a newly formed group called the Diversity Collegium. Co-founded by Dr. Price Cobbs, Dr. Roosevelt Thomas and other practitioners in 1991, the group put aside its competitiveness and banded together to advance the cause of diversity. I was in the second round of consultants invited to join the group. And meeting and working with Roosevelt, Price and the others significantly impacted my business and reinforced my commitment to the field. It also reaffirmed my belief and commitment to collaborating with others and coalition building. I stayed in the Collegium until 2002, but always respected my colleagues, especially the insightful wisdom of Roosevelt Thomas. He was a quiet gentle giant, steadily pushing diversity in a forward direction. His 1990 article “From Affirmative Action to Affirming Diversity” was the mainstay of every diversity practitioner I knew. And the books he wrote formed the backdrop of the business case for diversity. He was respected around the world and loved for his wise counsel and wisdom. Last week after exercising in his home, he fell, hit his head and never regained consciousness. His death was swift and sudden. Today what would have been his 69th birthday was a somber and stately funeral at Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta. Left behind to mourn are his wife Judge Ruby Thomas, their children, grand child, extended family and the entire world of diversity and inclusion indebted to his contribution to the field. His contributions to our global society will be felt for generations to come. -Carole Copeland Thomas, MBA, CDMP Click Here To Read The Diversity Collegium Press Release About The Death Of Dr. Roosevelt Thomas Your Comments Or Reflections About Dr. Roosevelt Thomas Are Welcome Pictured Above:
Retired Lt. Colonel Deborah L. Parker and Her Uncle The Late Command Sergeant Major Harris L. Parker ===================== Focus On Empowerment can be heard every Thursday at 1pm Eastern. Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ===================== Much like the SWOT analysis that I learned in business school years ago, there are many leadership lessons borrowed and adopted from the rank and file of military figures both past and present. You simply can’t win military campaigns without strong and effective leadership. And you can’t make progress in business, or community projects or on government initiatives without strong leadership. Are leaders born or made from their experiences of life? That’s a question we’ll ask our guest today. Deborah L. Parker learned much from her own military career as a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the US Army. And she learned even more from her uncle, Command Sergeant Major Harris L. Parker, who she affectionately called Uncle Horace. She captured that insight in her new book, Hardcore Leadership: 11 Master Lessons From My Airborne Ranger Uncle’s Final Jump. What does leadership mean to you? And when does a leader need to switch gears so that others can follow more effectively? We’ll explore leadership and its many lessons on today’s show. About The Author: The route of following the path of your calling led Deborah to start a motivational speaking, leadership and personal development practice, The DPJ Training Group, over 15 years ago. Springing this enterprise forth after numerous other careers from a social worker to army officer and corporate manager, she uses the insight gained from these opportunities to now train and coach employees in her client organizations on practical ways to overcome challenges in the workplace or other parts of their lives. She is known as dynamic, inspiring and practical in her approach by those who’ve attended her workshops and motivational speaking engagements. Deborah is the author of 3 books. A motivational memoir, Navigating Life’s Roadways: Stories of Insight from My Odyssey and Inspiration For Your Journey, was published in July 2011. She has ventured into the ebook space and Life is A Review: Observations and Collections of My Passages Through the Times is available on Amazon. Her book (October 2012) is For People of Strength, Soul, and Spirit: Seven Guidelines for Life & Career Success, which explores the African American story as powerful lessons in goal achievement. Her latest book, Hardcore Leadership: 11 Master Lessons from My Airborne Ranger Uncle’s “Final Jump” chronicles the life and in charge pursuits of her late uncle retired Command Sergeant Major, Vietnam Vet, along with his community positions as a former Chief Magistrate, Chair of Sussex County Board of Supervisors and Ranger Hall of Fame Inductee with takeaways for leaders in business and professional situations. In past writing pursuits, Deborah has published articles on business, career and lifestyle issues for publications such as the Alexandria Old Town Crier,Washington Afro-American Newspaper, Metro Herald and Arizona’s Black Executive Magazine. And I am a devout Christian. My children's godfather is gay. A very close personal friend of our family was gay. And I have had lesbian friends for many years. For me, it's just the way it is…some people are straight like me. Some people are not. And in that spirit I openly endorsed the Massachusetts court ruling on same sex marriage in 2004, much to the horror of some of my would be friends and clients. Now nine years later LGBT and same sex marriage issues are part of our everyday conversation. And today, to shed light on a very personal experience of what it's like to live in the LGBT community, my guest is Simma Lieberman. My friend for many years. A well respected diversity and inclusion consultant from Berkeley, California. And a lesbian mother who recently shared her evolution on same sex marriage following the death of her partner of 18 years, Sandra Brown. Her commentary was just published on the CNN website…and its heartwarming account of two women in love will cause you to re-examine your own perspective on LGBT issues. Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== When Terrorism Comes To YOUR Backyard When the two bombs blew my city apart at 2:50 pm on April 15, 2013, I was leading my group on the Cultural Caribbean Cruise that had been planned for more than a year. We had just docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico and I was able to turn my phone back on and check my email massages. As I finished that task and prepared to get off the ship to enjoy parts of the island, my phone rang. It was my childhood friend, Denise Gray Felder, calling in a panic. “Carole! Where are you? Are you and Michelle safe? How close are you to the explosion that just happened at the finish line of the Boston Marathon?” I thanked my friend for calling and reassured her that we were thousands of miles away from the scene of the amazing event. I collected my thoughts, wiped the shock off my face, and desperately searched the internet for more information on this breaking story. I had just sent off unrelated emails to friends and colleagues and learned that one friend had just handed the award to the winning female marathon runner more than half an hour before the first bomb exploded. And as the day continued I would learn the extend of the damage and the connections I personally had to the dead and injured. The good people of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten and St. Kitts were closely watching the Boston bombings and extended their sympathies to me as we traveled from one island to another. As soon as the guests on the ship heard the news they wanted to know if I or those who traveled with me had any loved ones or friends injured or displaced by the blasts. We did. One of my church member’s neighbors was the classmate of the dead eight year old boy. One of my sorority sister’s son was injured and hospitalized because of the bombings. One of our cruise traveler’s son was a television cameraman covering the marathon, and thankfully was not injured. And the connections just kept going deeper and deeper into the fabric of this horrific event. I took this terrorist act PERSONALLY. These two demonic young monsters tried to destroy MY city. They killed and injured the innocent who just wanted to watch a good race by cheering on their friends and loved ones straight through the finish line. I am heartbroken by the families who are burying their children, students, young adults and police officers. I go numb when I think about the 13+ newly minted amputees who are starting life all over again with artificial limbs. I am saddened by the the two businesses, Marathon Place and The Forum Restaurant, now boarded up, unable to reopen because they are an active crime scene. And as the chair of the Multicultural Committee of the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, I took these bombings PERSONALLY. Our committee and our Bureau have worked for nearly 20 years to eradicate the stigma of racial hostility that still lingers with some people. This incident was a personal affront to all of the efforts of our committee and Bureau. I was concerned that it would further hurt the Boston brand and keep diverse conventions, conferences, meetings and family reunions away from our city. Fortunately the swift actions of our city leaders dashed that threat. My heart leaped for joy when I watched onboard ship via satellite TV the dramatic chase, gun battle and ultimate capture of the wounded 19 year old brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. We didn’t have to worry about his 26 year old brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The police filled his body with bullets and baby brother ran him over in a stolen vehicle, only to escape into the streets of Watertown, Massachusetts. Thank God for our diverse group of elected officials and law enforcement officers in greater Boston. Led by the state’s first African American governor, Deval Patrick and supported by our first Black president, Barack Obama, they all worked as ONE in a decisive manner locking down entire cities to ensure the safety of its people. In less than five days, it was over. The mastermind of this reign of terror was dead. The other brother captured, thanks to an alert Watertown homeowner who was curious about why his boat was tampered. On the evening of April 24th following an Advisory meeting of the Boston Chapter National Black MBA Association, I drove down newly reopened Boylston Street to see the damage for myself. Yes, I found the boarded up businesses now labeled part of a crime scene and captured them on my camera. But I took pride in thanking one of the police officers at the scene for his service to our city. He took great satisfaction in my compliment and grinned from ear to ear. Detroit is my beloved birthplace, but Boston has been my adopted home for more than 30 years. I feel as much a part of the “Boston Strong” movement as everyone else in this region. Boston is a great city and has proved once again that it will survive and thrive despite the forces of evil. Yes, we have political, social, economic and educational issues, just like any other world class city. But we have a resilient power to press forward in defiant dignity. Multiculturalism and Diversity were on full parade last week. And so was the courage and commitment of ALL the people who live in my region. Police and elected officials teamed up with everyday “folk” to capture the bad guys. That is what I call faith in action. Boston Strong. Boston Strong. BOSTON STRONG!! ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live???
